I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I strongly oppose the president's recent remarks about sending more prisoners, including U.S. citizens, to prisons in El Salvador. All people on American soil deserve due process, and the federal government has shown clear disregard and disrespect for due process and our own laws in recent deportations of people to El Salvador. People are being taken off streets and away from their communities with very little evidence or resource to legal appeals. Being sent to another sovereign nation ruled by an authoritarian, self-proclaimed dictator makes it nearly impossible for these people to receive any type of due process, even when our official make mistakes -- as is currently demonstrated by the case with Abrego Garcia. Now, our president is actively researching ways to navigate around our laws in order to do this same thing with American citizens. He is already re-branding people as "homegrowns" in order to de-humanize them and set them apart from "real" Americans, in the same way he has already used rhetoric to demonize immigrants and foreigners. I refuse to support any of these measures. Our due process must be upheld. The power of our courts and laws must hold their integrity and not be ruled by the executive branch's whims. These are Constitutional issues, and our entire balance of power is being upended. This is not small. This is a growing dismantling of our rights, and it needs to stop now. Stand up and speak up for us, your constituents here in Wisconsin. Put checks on the power of the executive branch back in place, and uphold the integrity of our laws and rights.
