Withdraw Your Request for Proactively Eliminate Districts

To: Sen. Schmitt

From: A verified voter in Springfield, MO

May 12

I am a Missouri constituent writing to oppose your letter urging the DOJ to proactively identify and eliminate majority-minority congressional districts nationwide. The Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais was already a devastating blow to the Voting Rights Act. But you are now pushing the DOJ to go further than the ruling requires by actively targeting districts that give Black and minority voters a fair voice in government. This is voter suppression by another name. You are asking the federal government to sweep the country and dismantle representation for communities of color before anyone has even brought a legal challenge. Voters deserve fair maps. Politicians should not get to choose who has a voice and who doesn't. I urge you in the strongest possible terms to withdraw this request. You know what we are saying about you . . . we are saying you are racist. Is that what you want? To be known as racist?
