Oppose a national registry of autistic people!

To: Rep. Salinas, Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Salem, OR

April 25

History lesson: In 1930s Germany, gas chambers were first used on disabled children after their parents were persuaded to send their children away to a "hospital" for "treatment," and were returned home as cremated ashes. After that was exposed and hushed up, the gas chambers appeared again in prison camps where political prisoners were held, camps that were later filled with Jewish people, Romani people, and LGBTQ+ people. You can imagine, then, the chills running down the spines of every disabled person and every parent of a disabled child right now, after RFK Jr. announced that he wants a registry, in clear violation of HIPAA regulations, of autistic people. People who have been officially diagnosed are terrified right now, and people who suspect they are autistic now fear getting evaluated, putting any needed supports out of their reach. It began back then with disabled children. It could very well begin here with autistic children and adults. What will Congress do to put an end to this potential horror?
