An Open Letter
To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Feenstra
From: A verified voter in Ames, IA
July 15
As one of your constituents and a person of faith, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill.” While it is being promoted as a bold reform package, I believe it betrays both the core values of our country and the foundational principles of Christianity. If you, as public servants, claim to hold Christian values or represent Christian voters, I urge you to seriously consider how this bill contradicts Christ’s teachings. Christian Teaching: Protect the Poor and Vulnerable Jesus made it unmistakably clear: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). The Christian tradition—and the Bible itself—is full of commands to care for the poor, feed the hungry, and lift up the vulnerable. This bill slashes Medicaid, SNAP, housing assistance, and other lifelines millions depend on. That’s not moral reform—it’s institutionalized neglect. If enacted, it would leave countless children, seniors, disabled individuals, and working families without basic support. Christian Teaching: Heal the Sick Jesus never charged people for healing, nor did he screen them by income or employment status. He simply healed—freely and compassionately. This bill does the opposite: it ends Medicaid expansion, undermines access to mental health care, and threatens services for people with disabilities. Where in the Gospel did Jesus say only the wealthy deserve to be made whole? Christian Teaching: Lead with Honesty and Justice Proverbs 14:31 says, “Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker.” The public is being told this bill promotes “self-sufficiency,” but that is deeply misleading. It protects tax cuts for the wealthy while punishing people struggling to afford food, housing, and healthcare. This is not policy rooted in justice. It is exploitation dressed up as reform. Christian Teaching: Service Over Power Jesus taught that true leadership means serving others, especially the most vulnerable. This bill serves the rich and powerful while abandoning the weak and voiceless. It centralizes economic power and strips away vital protections in the name of “efficiency.” As your constituent, I ask you both: What kind of nation are we becoming if we celebrate policies that harm the poor while enriching the wealthy? Rejecting this bill is not just a political decision—it is a moral imperative. If we are to remain a nation that honors justice, mercy, and service—the values Christ preached—then this legislation must be opposed. Please do what is right, not what is politically convenient. Stand against the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” and stand with the people Christ called us to care for.
