The Texas Legislature had a historic budget surplus this session yet failed to make robust investments in public education that would benefit the 5.5 million students across our state. Instead, Governor Abbott prioritized private school voucher schemes that drain resources from public schools serving the majority of Texas children. Strong public schools are vital community institutions that foster diversity, social cohesion, and economic mobility. With 62% of students economically disadvantaged, equitable funding for public education ensures all children have access to quality learning environments regardless of their zip code. I urge you to redirect funds away from voucher programs that benefit few families and towards strengthening and supporting our public education system that lifts up all Texas communities.
