Refine Terror-Financing Act to Protect Constitutional Rights
To: Rep. Roy
From: A constituent in Canyon Lake, TX
November 20
The proposed Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act aims to provide relief to Americans unlawfully or wrongfully detained abroad by postponing tax filing deadlines, interest, and penalties during their captivity. It also seeks to terminate the tax-exempt status of organizations that provide material support to terrorist groups. While assisting hostages is a noble goal, terminating the tax-exempt status of certain organizations raises concerns about potential overreach and infringement on civil liberties. A more nuanced approach that balances national security interests with protecting constitutional rights may be warranted. Additionally, the administrative and legal processes outlined for designating "terrorist supporting organizations" lack sufficient due process protections and judicial oversight. For these reasons, I cannot support the legislation in its current form and urge reconsideration of some provisions to address the aforementioned issues.
