I am writing as your constituent to urge you to oppose the Trump administration’s proposed rescission of rules under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which protect accessibility standards for people with disabilities. It will take effect on September 12.
For over 50 years, Section 504 has been a cornerstone of civil rights, ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equal access to education, healthcare, housing, and public services. Rolling back these protections would be a step backward, both legally and morally, by imposing new barriers on millions of Americans who already face daily challenges.
Even more concerning is the administration’s use of a fast-track process — intended only for minor, noncontroversial corrections — to push through this major and controversial change. This abuse of process limits transparency, denies meaningful public input, and undermines trust in government decision-making.
Although the rescission currently applies only to the Department of Energy, it sets a dangerous precedent. If left unchallenged, it will likely be extended to other federal agencies, weakening Section 504 protections across the government and eroding decades of progress in disability rights.
Accessibility is not a luxury or a technical detail; it is a fundamental civil right. Rather than dismantling safeguards, we should be strengthening them to reflect modern needs and advancing equity for all citizens.
I urge you to speak out publicly against the rule rescission, demand accountability for misuse of the fast-track process, and work with your colleagues to safeguard accessibility standards in federal agencies. The lives and dignity of millions of Americans depend on these standards as part of their hard-won civil rights.
