Thirty Years Abroad, Never Missed an Election — The SAVE Act Would End That
To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla
From: A verified voter in Redwood Valley, CA
March 20
I’ve lived abroad for thirty years and never missed a US election. I’ve never wanted to become a citizen of my host country, because I’m proud to be an American. My roots run deep: I have a large Greek-American family in California, I’ve maintained strong ties to my country my entire time abroad, and I’ve raised two children to be informed, engaged US citizens.
The SAVE Act would require me to travel to California to show my passport in person just to stay registered. That’s a round-trip flight of roughly $XX — a financial barrier to voting that has a name: a poll tax.
I haven’t done anything wrong. I’ve done everything right. This bill would end my participation in the democracy I’ve spent thirty years defending from afar.
