I am writing to express my strong opposition to the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (H.R.1), which was recently passed by the House of Representatives. As a resident of North Carolina, I am deeply concerned about the potential impacts of this legislation on our nation’s fiscal health and the healthcare of millions of Americans. Firstly, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that this bill will add $2.6 trillion to the 10-year budget deficit (from 2025 through 2034). At a time when our national debt is already at unprecedented levels, increasing the deficit further is fiscally irresponsible and will place an undue burden on future generations. Secondly, the bill includes provisions that will lead to significant losses in healthcare coverage. According to the CBO, approximately 8.6 million Americans are projected to lose Medicaid coverage by 2034, with 5.2 million of those losses directly attributable to the imposition of work requirements. These work requirements are scheduled to take effect at the end of 2026, which is alarmingly soon. Additionally, the bill prohibits Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care starting in 2027 and bans funding for nonprofits that provide abortion care. These measures will deny essential healthcare services to vulnerable populations, further exacerbating inequalities in our healthcare system. Furthermore, the bill cuts spending on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by requiring states to cover 5% of benefit costs and 75% of administration costs, with additional penalties if the error rate exceeds 6%. This could result in reduced benefits for those who rely on SNAP to feed their families, compounding the negative impact on low-income households. I urge you to reconsider the passage of this bill. Instead, I encourage you to support legislation that promotes fiscal responsibility and ensures that all Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare. Our nation cannot afford to prioritize short-term gains at the expense of long-term stability and the well-being of its citizens. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your response and actions that reflect the needs and concerns of your constituents.
