I'm writing to co-sponsor and pass the Stop Wall Street Looting Act.
Private equity firms have been exploiting loopholes in our financial system for too long, enriching themselves at the expense of workers, communities, and our economy. They buy up companies, load them with debt, strip them of assets, and then walk away with massive profits while leaving devastation in their wake.
The Stop Wall Street Looting Act would put an end to these abusive practices by:
- Holding private equity firms liable for the debts and legal judgments of companies they control
- Protecting workers by prioritizing their wages and benefits in bankruptcy proceedings
- Ending extractive financial practices that allow firms to loot companies for short-term gains
- Increasing transparency and oversight of private equity activities
The growth of private equity has been staggering, from managing less than $1 trillion in 2004 to over $13 trillion today. Without major changes, a handful of ultra-wealthy executives will continue to profit at everyone else's expense.
I urge you to stand up for workers, communities, and our economy by co-sponsoring and supporting the Stop Wall Street Looting Act. It's time to rein in Wall Street's predatory practices and build an economy that works for everyone.
