Disappointment in vote on joint disapproval resolutions on Gaza

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Butler

From: A verified voter in Sacramento, CA

November 21

I am deeply disappointed and ashamed of my senators voting to continue to arm Israel. California is supposed to be a shining beacon of progressivism and human rights. By voting no on the joint resolutions of disapproval, you have sold that ideal short. The US is breaking our own laws by continuing to fund Israel’s genocide. We are also breaking international law by enabling what the UN has labeled a credible genocide. Nearly 50,000 people have died. Most of them are women and children. What have they done to be murdered by American weapons? Being born in the wrong place? How can you look at your own children and not feel the pain and horror the parents of Gaza have experienced? The scenes in Gaza are apocalyptic and hellish. Famine is imminent in the north, and barely any aid is getting in. A month ago, the Biden administration suggested limiting weapons if aid didn’t increase. Every aid organization says that it hasn’t improved. Yet the Biden administration still wants to send these weapons. It is a moral stain on our country and on you as our senator. In 20 years when this is taught in schools, do you really want to be discussed in the pro-genocide side? I understand being in favor of Israel’s self-defense. Any self-defense stopped a year ago. Netanyahu is pushing this war on and on to stay in power. His right wing ministers want to settle Gaza. Why are you allowing this to happen? Stand with Sen. Sanders and your Democratic colleagues. Do what is right. Listen to your constituents. If there is anything this election has shown us, it’s that the Democratic Party is out of touch with most Americans. Most Americans, and especially young Americans who the Democrats have disillusioned, support an immediate ceasefire. According to Data for Progress, https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2024/5/8/support-for-a-permanent-ceasefire-in-gaza-increases-across-party-lines, 70% of Americans support an immediate ceasefire. Over half of Democrats think Israel is committing a genocide. A plurality of voters (38%) support decreasing aid to Israel. Only 18% want to increase aid. Why not represent the convictions of the American people, your constituents? Why vote to perpetuate endless war and pain for innocent people? Again, I am very disappointed that you have voted against an arms embargo to Israel. I urge you to do the right thing and limit ongoing US complicity in genocide. The incoming Trump administration will give Netanyahu carte blanche to destroy Gaza. Don’t give him more tools to do so.
