Senator Fetterman must condemn Trump's insurrection pardons protecting democracy

To: Sen. McCormick, Rep. Houlahan, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Reading, PA

January 27, 2025

It is deeply concerning that Senator John Fetterman has refused to condemn the egregious pardons issued by former President Trump to individuals involved in the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. These pardons undermine the rule of law and send a dangerous message that violence against law enforcement officers will be tolerated. The resolution condemning these pardons has been signed by every other Democratic senator, recognizing the severity of the actions taken that day to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. Senator Fetterman's reluctance to take a clear stance on this issue is unacceptable. As an elected official, it is incumbent upon Senator Fetterman to defend democratic institutions and hold accountable those who sought to overturn the results of a free and fair election through violent means. His statement that "some people are very deserving of a second chance and get a pardon" fails to acknowledge the gravity of the crimes committed and the threat they posed to our democracy. I urge Senator Fetterman to reconsider his position and join his colleagues in condemning these pardons unequivocally. The American people deserve leaders who will uphold the Constitution and protect the foundations of our republic without equivocation.
