Oppose DOJ’s Rollback of School Desegregation Orders

To: Sen. Cortez Masto, Rep. Amodei, Sen. Rosen

May 11

I am writing to express deep concern over the Justice Department’s decision to end a longstanding school desegregation order in Louisiana. This move threatens to undo decades of civil rights progress and sends a troubling signal about our nation’s commitment to equal education for all. Desegregation orders exist for a reason: they are legal remedies designed to correct systemic and intentional discrimination. Ending these agreements without clear, evidence-based assurances that racial disparities have been fully addressed is reckless and unjust. The notion that segregation is no longer an issue is simply false. Across the country—including in Nevada—students of color still face segregated learning environments, unequal access to resources, and significant opportunity gaps. Research has shown that lifting desegregation orders often leads to a resurgence in racial segregation. That is unacceptable. We must remain vigilant in upholding civil rights and fighting for integrated, equitable schools—not roll back protections because of political convenience or willful ignorance. I urge you to speak out and oppose this rollback. These court orders remain a vital tool in holding systems accountable and ensuring that all students—regardless of race—can learn, thrive, and succeed. We cannot allow decades of hard-fought progress to be erased.
