Demand accountability for repeated breaches of classified information

To: Sen. Banks, Rep. Messmer, Sen. Young

From: A constituent in Mount Vernon, IN

August 17

I am writing to express concern over the repeated security breaches involving sensitive government information being left unprotected and accessible to the public. The latest incident, details about the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska were printed and abandoned at a hotel business center, is unacceptable. These continued lapses put national security at risk and reveal an alarming lack of care in handling classified materials and the incompetence of the Trump administration. Sensitive documents containing precise logistical information, phone numbers of government staff, and even potential gifts to be exchanged were carelessly left behind. This follows other recent breaches like unauthorized individuals being added to law enforcement communications. Such mishandling of classified information is a serious dereliction of duty that undermines public trust. I urge an immediate and thorough investigation into these repeated breaches to identify the gaps in protocol that allowed them to occur. Stringent new security measures must be implemented, and those responsible must be held fully accountable. Our nation's secrets and global standing depend on the ability to safeguard sensitive information. These ongoing lapses are intolerable and put us all at risk. Substantive action is needed to address this dangerous pattern of negligence.
