cannabis legalization

To: Sen. Cavanaugh, Gov. Pillen

From: A constituent in Omaha, NE

October 15, 2025

Dear Governor Pillen, I am writing to express my concern regarding your continued opposition to the legalization of cannabis in Nebraska. As one of your constituents, I feel strongly that the actions (or inactions) taken by your office on this matter are not aligned with the will of the people. In recent years, Nebraskans have made their voices clear—public support for medical and even recreational cannabis is strong. Yet despite this, legislative progress continues to be blocked by a small group of officials, including yourself. This is not just disappointing—it undermines the democratic process. 1. Public Support Is Clear
Polls consistently show that a majority of Nebraskans support medical cannabis access. In 2020, over 190,000 Nebraskans signed a petition to get medical cannabis on the ballot—before it was blocked by a legal technicality. This year, Nebraskans are again fighting for ballot access. Ignoring this movement ignores your constituents. 2. Economic Opportunity
States that have legalized cannabis have seen substantial tax revenue, job creation, and business growth. Nebraska, a largely rural state, could benefit significantly from this industry—particularly in farming, processing, and retail sectors. At a time when we are looking to strengthen our economy and retain young workers, cannabis legalization offers a clear path forward. 3. Health and Criminal Justice
Medical cannabis offers relief to Nebraskans suffering from epilepsy, chronic pain, PTSD, and other serious conditions—many of whom now must leave the state or break the law to access treatment. Additionally, continuing to criminalize cannabis use ties up law enforcement resources and disproportionately affects minority communities. Legal, regulated access can help correct these systemic issues. 4. Regulated, Responsible Use
Legalization does not mean unregulated access. Neighboring states have proven that adult-use or medical cannabis systems can be rolled out with strong oversight. Regulation ensures product safety, restricts youth access, and reduces black-market activity—benefits Nebraska currently forfeits. Governor Pillen, I urge you to reconsider your stance and recognize this moment for what it is: an opportunity to align with your constituents, strengthen our economy, support patients in need, and make a responsible, forward-thinking policy change. Please respect the will of the people and allow cannabis reform to move forward in Nebraska. I ask for your leadership, not obstruction, on this important issue.
