Oppose Trump's Harmful Tariffs!

To: Rep. Feenstra, Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley

From: A constituent in Huxley, IA

April 5

As your constituent and a concerned Iowan, I urge you to take immediate action against the proposed "Liberation Day" tariffs that threaten severe harm to our state’s economy. These policies—including sweeping reciprocal tariffs on imports—risk repeating the mistakes of past trade wars while inflicting new damage on Iowa’s farmers, businesses, and families. The stakes for Iowa could not be higher. Recent market volatility shows how tariff threats can destabilize global trade, with agricultural commodities like soybeans already seeing sharp price declines. Given that more than half of Iowa’s soybean crop and nearly a third of our pork production depend on export markets, retaliatory tariffs could devastate rural communities. These policies also threaten to increase costs across our economy. Economists warn that broad-based tariffs will raise prices for everything from farm equipment to household goods, squeezing family budgets already strained by inflation. Past experience shows such measures lead to job losses, require costly taxpayer bailouts for farmers, and ultimately weaken America’s competitive position. I implore you to: Publicly oppose these blanket tariffs and advocate for more strategic trade policies Work to expand and protect export markets for Iowa’s agricultural products Support measures to safeguard Iowa farmers and businesses from collateral damage The lessons of recent trade wars are clear: tariffs hurt the very communities they claim to help. I appreciate your attention to this critical issue and request a response detailing how you plan to protect Iowa’s economy from these damaging policies.
