Protect Americans’ First and Second Amendment Rights

To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Kennedy, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Provo, UT

January 25

I am concerned about the behavior of ICE and other law enforcement agencies with respect to the protesters in Minnesota. While I think these agencies have a right to enforce the law, they need to do so in a way that respects protesters' first and second amendment rights. These rights are critical and recent behavior by ICE appears to disregard these rights and discourages others from exercising these rights in the future. I am also troubled by the claims made by Homeland Security and FBI with respect to the shooting of Alex Pretti that are not consistent with the videos that have been released to the public. Concerns like this should be taken seriously, investigated carefully, and not quickly dismissed by claims that are made without any corresponding evidence. Republican leaders like yourselves have an ability and responsibility to raise concerns about these behaviors. Please use the important powers of Congress to investigate and respond to the actions of these agencies and use your public platforms to ensure that Americans' first and second amendment rights are vigorously defended. I ask that you take action to recommit government agencies and public officials to the protections of Americans' civil liberties and call for transparency and careful consideration in the investigation of these events. While Americans differ in their views of immigration policy and ICE, it is critical to stand up for the basic rights and liberties of all citizens, whatever their political persuasion. A deep commitment to these principles is more important now than ever.
