Defend Democracy: Stop Trump’s Attack on Voting Rights

To: Sen. Marshall, Rep. Estes, Sen. Moran

From: A constituent in Wichita, KS

April 28

I am writing to express urgent concern over the Trump administration’s new Justice Department policy to weaken enforcement of federal voting rights protections. According to reporting, the DOJ will sharply limit its ability to challenge voter suppression efforts at the state level, making it far harder to protect Americans from discriminatory voting laws (The Guardian, April 2025). Voting rights are the backbone of our democracy, and undermining their enforcement threatens free and fair elections for all. This move comes alongside broader efforts by the Trump administration to centralize executive power and weaken checks and balances, including frequent use of emergency powers and aggressive purges of independent institutions (Washington Post, April 2025). Gutting voting rights enforcement is not about efficiency but silencing dissent and controlling outcomes. No healthy democracy can function without strong, impartial protections for voters. I urge you to act immediately to investigate and block these changes. Congress must defend the Voting Rights Act, safeguard access to the ballot box, and uphold the democratic principles you swore to protect. Allowing these policies to stand would set a dangerous precedent that future generations will not easily undo.
