Oppose Military Threats Against Greenland and Uphold NATO Alliance Commitments

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

January 5

I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose any military action or coercive threats against Greenland and to reaffirm our nation's commitment to NATO's Article 5 mutual defense obligations. The recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has transformed what were once dismissed as rhetorical threats into genuine security concerns for our European allies, particularly Denmark. President Trump's repeated statements about seizing Greenland represent a dangerous escalation that undermines the NATO alliance. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has made clear that "Our country is not an object of superpower rhetoric. We are a people. A land. And democracy." Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated unequivocally that "If the United States attacks another NATO country, everything stops." These are not abstract concerns. Denmark's military intelligence service has classified the U.S. as a security risk for the first time in history. The justifications offered for these threats do not withstand scrutiny. Trump claimed Russian and Chinese ships surround Greenland, but Peter Viggo Jakobsen of the Royal Danish Defence College confirmed these ships "do not exist." The U.S. already has the ability to request additional military bases on Greenland and negotiate mineral deals through diplomatic channels. As Jakobsen noted, "Trump is creating a problem that does not exist." Any military action against Greenland would trigger Article 5, which treats an attack on one NATO ally as an attack on all. Germany has already indicated European allies would defend Greenland. Pursuing this course would shatter the alliance that has guaranteed European security for 75 years and protected American interests across the globe. I urge you to speak out against these threats and work with colleagues to pass a resolution reaffirming our commitment to NATO and the territorial integrity of all member nations. Our alliances are built on trust and mutual respect, not coercion. The sovereignty of democratic nations must be respected.
