After more than a decade of debate, it is clear we need strong federal protections for journalists and their sources. While 49 states have shield laws, these protections vary widely and many are outdated for the modern digital era. The PRESS Act would provide robust and consistent safeguards to prevent the government from spying on journalists or forcing them to reveal confidential sources, with limited exceptions for imminent threats. Enshrining these protections in federal law is crucial to upholding the vital role of a free press and ensuring journalists can do their jobs without fear of retaliation or overreach. With broad bipartisan support, now is the time to pass the PRESS Act and secure a bedrock of our democracy – honest, unfettered journalism that holds the powerful accountable.
