Support for SB 627 - The No Secret Police Act

To: Gov. Newsom, Asm. Krell, Sen. Ashby

From: A verified voter in Sacramento, CA

June 16

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong support for SB 627, the No Secret Police Act, introduced by Senator Scott Wiener. In a democratic society, trust in law enforcement is vital. The increasing use of masked officers, unmarked vehicles, and personnel without identifying information, sometimes even dressed in military gear, undermines that trust and evokes authoritarian tactics historically used to intimidate and suppress the public. When officers interact with civilians, they must be identifiable and accountable. This is not only a matter of transparency, it's a matter of protecting civil liberties, preventing abuse, and upholding democratic norms. Secret police tactics have no place in California or anywhere in the United States. SB 627 is a critical step toward restoring public trust by banning local, state, and federal law enforcement from concealing their identity while engaging with the public, with reasonable exceptions for safety. It promotes transparency, accountability, and community safety. I urge you to support this legislation and ensure it passes into law. Californians deserve to know who is policing them.
