Congress Must Block Any Forced Takeover of Greenland

To: Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

January 10

I am writing as a constituent to urge you to clearly and publicly oppose any U.S. action that threatens Greenland’s sovereignty or contemplates military or coercive control. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and part of the NATO alliance structure. Its people have repeatedly stated they do not seek incorporation into the United States. Any attempt to seize or force control over Greenland would violate international law, undermine the principle of self-determination, and seriously damage U.S. credibility with allies. The Constitution grants Congress—not the president—the authority to declare war. I urge you to: • Publicly reject any proposal involving the use or threat of force against Greenland • Enforce Congress’s Article I war powers and the War Powers Resolution • Affirm respect for allied sovereignty and the right of the Greenlandic people to determine their own future Threatening force against an allied territory is reckless, unlawful, and destabilizing. I expect clear leadership and a public record opposing any such action. Thank you for your attention.
