I am writing to express my outrage about ICE's plan to convert industrial warehouses into detention facilities across the country and to demand that you take immediate action to prevent these camps from being built in our state.
The Trump administration has purchased or proposed over twenty warehouse sites nationwide to detain as many as 9,500 people. Many of these facilities are located near schools, hospitals, and places of worship, yet they were acquired without notifying or consulting local officials. This lack of transparency is unacceptable and demonstrates a complete disregard for community input and safety.
These detention facilities have a documented history of inhumane treatment. Other ICE facilities have been associated with abuse, neglect, and unaccounted disappearances. Families, lawyers, and political officials have been denied access and oversight into these operations. The expansion has raised concerns even among immigration enforcement proponents about facility operations and the infrastructure impacts on surrounding communities.
This issue has already generated bipartisan opposition. Protests and pressure campaigns have successfully caused many companies and landowners to cancel their deals with the Department of Homeland Security. However, several sales remain pending, which is why your immediate action is critical.
I am asking you to publicly speak out against ICE's detention camp expansion and to support regulations that would prevent ICE from purchasing and building these facilities in our state. Our communities deserve transparency, accountability, and humane treatment of all people within our borders. These warehouse detention camps represent a dangerous expansion of a system that operates without adequate oversight or regard for human dignity.
I expect you to stand with your constituents in opposing this expansion and to use your position to protect our communities from these facilities.
