Urgent: Don’t Let Trump Destroy the Senate I’m writing because I’m deeply alarmed by reports that Donald Trump is calling for the Senate to scrap the filibuster and end the shutdown through the so-called “nuclear option.” Even Senate Majority Leader John Thune has pushed back — and for good reason. This isn’t just a short-term maneuver to reopen the government. It’s a dangerous attempt to permanently weaken the Senate’s role as a check on absolute power. Eliminating the filibuster would silence debate, erode our institutions, and set a precedent that could destroy the balance our democracy depends on.
