I am writing to urge you to take immediate legislative action to protect the hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals currently living and working in the United States, particularly those who have become vital members of our community in Springfield, Ohio. On January 28, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed a lower court's ruling in National TPS Alliance v. Noem, finding that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem exceeded her statutory authority by attempting to prematurely terminate TPS for Haitian and Venezuelan nationals. The court highlighted that such actions contradict the procedural safeguards established by Congress to ensure stability for individuals fleeing extraordinary conditions. The Haitian families in Springfield are the embodiment of the American dream. They are hard-working taxpayers who boost our local economy, launch small businesses, and fill critical labor shortages in essential caretaker fields, including child and elder care. Despite these contributions, their legal status is set to expire on February 3, 2026, placing them at risk of deportation to a country that the U.S. State Department currently classifies under a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory due to life-threatening gang violence and civil unrest. It is both a humanitarian and economic imperative that we do not abandon these families to a recognized war zone. I respectfully request that you: Introduce or co-sponsor a bill to extend emergency TPS for Haitian nationals beyond the current February 2026 deadline. Support a moratorium on all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention and deportation proceedings for Haitian TPS holders until safe conditions are restored in Haiti.
