I am writing to urge you to oppose the Make Elections Great Again Act introduced on January 29th, 2026. This legislation represents a dangerous federal overreach that would strip states of their constitutional authority to administer elections while imposing costly restrictions that solve a problem that does not exist.
The MEGA Act would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID to vote, despite tens of millions of Americans lacking the necessary documentation. This burden falls disproportionately on people with disabilities, younger voters, and Black and Hispanic communities. These requirements would effectively disenfranchise eligible citizens who have every right to participate in our democracy.
Beyond documentation requirements, the bill would force states to discard mail-in ballots received after polls close on election day, ban universal vote by mail systems, and prohibit ranked choice voting in federal elections. These mandates ignore the diverse needs of states and the voting systems they have developed to serve their residents. States should retain the authority to determine how best to facilitate secure and accessible elections for their citizens.
The justification for these sweeping changes rests on claims of widespread election fraud that simply do not reflect reality. Election fraud in the United States is vanishingly rare. This legislation would impose enormous administrative and financial costs on states to address a virtually nonexistent problem while creating real barriers for millions of legitimate voters.
I ask that you oppose the MEGA Act and protect both state sovereignty and voting access. Our election systems work, and voters deserve representatives who will defend their right to participate rather than erect unnecessary obstacles. Please stand against this legislation and communicate your opposition publicly.
