Demand SNAP be funded from contingency funds

To: Sen. Merkley, Rep. Salinas, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Wilsonville, OR

October 30

SNAP has a contingency fund for a reason! This regime needs to release it and not STARVE THEIR CONSTITUENTS, possibly to death! They need to think of the children! Oregon is apparently putting $5 million toward helping food banks, to make up for the lack of SNAP benefits in this state. A coffee shop has raised $200,000 to help with the need. Aren't we wonderful? And don't get me wrong, EVERY dollar of that is needed, EVERY dollar is going to help save lives. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/portland-businesses-rally-support-snap-beneficiaries-heretic-coffee/283-33241cb5-b5b4-4e96-a5a4-d78d6ee144bf In 2022, an average of over $90 million per month was spent on SNAP benefits in Oregon. https://fns-prod.azureedge.us/sites/default/files/resource-files/snap-state-factsheet-or.pdf The efforts being made to keep our neighbors from starving are DROPS IN A BUCKET to what's actually needed. This is the federal government's responsibility and commitment, and they have a CONTINGENCY fund meant to be used for scenarios such as this shutdown. Funding ICE to deport illegal immigrants, even if they are 100% illegal and 100% at least minor criminals (and repeated evidence shows they are not) while allowing AMERICAN CITIZENS to go hungry, potentially STARVE, is unconscionable. Demand the Trump regime - I mean administration - release the contingency funds. Demand the Republicans get back to work and actually take care of their constituents and get a budget passed; it's not like Oregon is alone in our suffering. Demand accountability.
