Defend Our Public Schools: Opt Michigan Out of Federal Vouchers I urge you to protect Michigan’s public education by opting our state out of the federal voucher program tucked into the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025. For 30 years, Michigan has served as a test case for educational privatization, giving us the highest percentage of publicly funded, for-profit charter schools in the nation. The data shows this experiment has failed. Over 70% of Michigan’s charter schools are run by for-profit entities, total districts have ballooned by 43% despite declining statewide enrollment, and more than one in three charters closes within five years. Furthermore, privatization leaves traditional public schools to serve a higher concentration of students with disabilities while draining the necessary resources to do so. Federal vouchers represent a more radical extension of these flawed policies—an approach Michigan voters have repeatedly rejected and our state constitution prohibits. Public schools exist to serve every child regardless of race, creed, or status. Balkanizing our school system to subsidize private interests directly undermines the common good. Please stand up for our students, families, and educators. Say no to destructive privatization schemes and decline federal education vouchers in Michigan. Don't make deals with fascists!
