Oppose Markwayne Mullin's Nomination for DHS Secretary - Unfit

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

March 5

I am writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of Rep. Markwayne Mullin to serve as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. While Mullin has served in Congress, he’s no better and in some ways worse than Kristi Noem. His record demonstrates a pattern of impulsive behavior and policy positions that raise serious concerns about his fitness to lead an agency responsible for national security, disaster response, and immigration enforcement. We don’t need another thug in that office. Mullin's temperament is particularly troubling for a cabinet-level position requiring diplomatic skill and measured judgment. He has a documented history of confrontational behavior in congressional hearings, including telling Rep. Ben Ray Luján to "shut up" during committee proceedings and engaging in heated exchanges with expert witnesses. Most recently, he attempted to physically fight Teamsters President Sean O'Brien during a Senate hearing, requiring intervention from other Senators. This lack of self-control is incompatible with leading an agency that manages complex crises and coordinates with international partners. His legislative record also raises questions about his commitment to protecting vulnerable populations. In 2013, Mullin voted against renewing the Violence Against Women Act due to provisions protecting LGBTQ individuals. For an agency that oversees immigration enforcement and refugee resettlement, this vote suggests a willingness to exclude certain groups from protection based on ideology rather than security needs. Furthermore, Mullin's characterization of the Trail of Tears as "the volunteer walk" on Fox News demonstrates either a troubling ignorance of American history or a willingness to distort it for political purposes. While he later expressed regret for imprecise language, this incident reveals a casual relationship with historical facts that is dangerous in a position requiring accurate intelligence assessment and public communication during emergencies. The Department of Homeland Security requires leadership that combines strategic thinking, diplomatic skill, and respect for all Americans. Mullin's behavior and record suggests he lacks these essential qualifications. I urge you to oppose his nomination. Thank you.
