Approve a data center moratorium now

To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Balderson

From: A verified voter in Athens, OH

September 12

As your Ohio constituent, I'm writing to urge you to support an immediate moratorium on new data center construction until meaningful federal guardrails are in place. The backlash against the unchecked proliferation of these facilities is real, widespread, and bipartisan: A recent poll from Embold Research and Heatmap found that 75 percent of Americans oppose a data center being built near their home. Voters are paying attention, and they want their representatives to act before irreversible damage is done to local water supplies, electric grids, and utility bills. The current rush to fast-track AI infrastructure has put corporate interests ahead of community control. Communities are being asked to absorb enormous strains on their water and energy systems while hyperscale developers, private equity firms, and AI investors collect the profits. As Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers put it when he reversed his position, Michigan needs “stronger guardrails to protect community control, prevent utility price hikes, protect our water, and stop pay-to-play schemes.” That sentiment should not depend on which party holds a given seat. It should be federal policy. I ask you to support a pause on new data center approvals until Congress establishes a fair, transparent process that addresses water usage, energy demand, rate-payer protections, and disclosure of conflicts of interest. The longer this issue is left to lobbyists and well-funded insiders, the more it will corrode public trust in every institution that allows it. A moratorium is the bare minimum of responsible governance. Please stand with the communities in your district and vote yes.
