I am writing to demand immediate congressional oversight and action regarding the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s failure to investigate the killing of Renee Good.
The Civil Rights Division exists specifically to investigate potential civil rights violations involving law enforcement use of force. Its refusal to act in this case represents a serious failure of its statutory duty and undermines public trust in federal civil rights enforcement.
This inaction is occurring under the leadership of Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, who was confirmed in April. Given her prior role as a personal attorney to former President Trump, the appearance that the Civil Rights Division may be protecting political interests rather than enforcing the law impartially is deeply concerning.
No one is above the law. When civil rights enforcement is selectively applied or ignored, it erodes confidence in the justice system and signals that constitutional protections depend on politics rather than facts.
I urge you to:
- Demand a full and independent federal civil rights investigation into the killing of Renee Good
- Conduct immediate oversight into why the Civil Rights Division failed to act
- Call for the removal of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Kaur Dhillon if she is unwilling or unable to carry out the duties of her office
The American people deserve a Department of Justice that enforces civil rights without fear or favor. Accountability and transparency are not optional.
