I am writing to insist that you oppose any DHS funding package that does not include strict, enforceable accountability measures. Recent reporting on DHS and ICE operations, including the reckless, unaccountable actions that led to the killing of Renee Nicole Good, shows clearly that these agencies are operating without meaningful oversight. Congress cannot continue writing blank checks for blatant lawlessness.
My tax dollars must not fund agencies or contractors that violate civil rights, hide their identities, or operate in the shadows. I am demanding the following minimum requirements in any DHS appropriations bill:
1. Mandatory identification: DHS officers must display their name, rank, badge number, and agency at all times when interacting with the public. No masks, no anonymity.
2. Body‑worn cameras with secure, FOIA‑compliant storage: All interactions with the public must be recorded and backed up to servers subject to federal transparency and preservation laws. Personal devices must be banned while on duty.
3. No warrantless enforcement: Officers may not carry or execute warrants that have not been reviewed and signed by a judge.
4. No taxpayer funding for private prisons or detention centers: Public money must not support private facilities that profit from detention, abuse, or the expansion of mass incarceration.
DHS has repeatedly demonstrated that without firm limits, abuses will continue. Congress has the sworn duty and the power to stop funding these abuses.
I expect you to oppose any DHS funding bill that does not include these protections. Constituents deserve strict accountability requirements, full transparency, and respect for constitutional rights. The power of the purse is one of Congress’s most important tools. Please use it to protect the rights, safety, and dignity of the people you represent.
