I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding recent reports of arrests connected to immigration-related protests and the broader issue they raise about the treatment of peaceful civic engagement in our country.
I understand that facts in individual cases can be complex and that courts ultimately determine legal responsibility. My concern extends beyond any single event. I believe strongly that a healthy democracy depends on protecting the constitutional rights of people to peacefully assemble, express disagreement with government policy, and participate in public discourse without fear of inappropriate intimidation or suppression.
Public safety and lawful enforcement of our laws are important responsibilities. At the same time, government authority carries an equally important responsibility to exercise restraint, transparency, and accountability. When people begin to question whether peaceful expression may expose them to disproportionate consequences, it can have a chilling effect that reaches far beyond one protest or one issue.
I am asking for continued oversight and transparency regarding actions taken by federal agencies in situations involving public demonstrations. I would like to see clear distinctions made between peaceful protest activities and unlawful conduct, and I would encourage efforts to ensure that constitutional protections are consistently respected.
Regardless of political viewpoints or opinions about immigration policy itself, I believe Americans across the political spectrum benefit when civil liberties are protected and trust in our institutions remains strong.
Thank you for your service and for taking the concerns of your constituents seriously. I would appreciate knowing your perspective on this issue and any actions you intend to take.
