Immediate Action: Protect Human Rights & Due Process for Immigrants & Refugees
To: Sen. Banks, Sen. Young, Rep. Messmer
From: A constituent in Mount Vernon, IN
April 8
I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate and principled action regarding recent U.S. policies and practices that are harming vulnerable communities, including Venezuelan refugees, Ukrainian nationals, and international individuals detained or deported for expressing free speech views. I am deeply troubled by:
•The deportation of Venezuelan refugees fleeing humanitarian and political crises; •The targeting and detention of individuals for their speech or beliefs, without proper due process; •The inconsistent and sometimes deplorable treatment of Ukrainians, especially amid ongoing conflict in their home country. These are humanitarian issues, not political ones. The United States must uphold its values of freedom, justice, and compassion—not only in words, but in action. We have a moral and legal responsibility to protect those seeking safety, to defend the right to free expression, and to ensure due process for all—regardless of citizenship or country of origin. I urge you to:
•Advocate for protections and pathways for asylum seekers, especially those from Venezuela and Ukraine; •Demand transparency and accountability in how immigration and customs enforcement handles international detainees; •Oppose any policies that criminalize speech or suppress dissent under the guise of national security. •Bring back the innocent people who were deported to El Salvador due to errors and did not commit crimes. Human dignity is not negotiable. The people impacted by these policies deserve to be treated with respect and fairness. I hope you will raise your voice and take bold, compassionate action on their behalf.
