Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v Callais just gutted what remained of the Voting Rights Act's protections for Black representation, and Republicans are already acting on it. Louisiana is eliminating one of its two Black-majority congressional districts. Alabama already erased one of its own before last fall's primaries. A Mississippi state senator is openly calling to erase Bennie Thompson's district — the only Black member of Congress in a state that is 38% Black. This is not a series of isolated redistricting disputes. Yvette Clarke, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, told NBC News that 19 of the caucus's 62 members are at risk through 2028. Nearly a third of Black congressional representation is on the chopping block. Steve Cohen's Memphis district was carved three ways and folded into a county whose official seal still flies a Confederate battle flag — one the Tennessee legislature voted 70-24 to keep in 2025. The historical parallel is not subtle. This is administrative disenfranchisement, updated for the 21st century. The John Lewis Act would restore and strengthen the preclearance protections that the Court has systematically dismantled. Every day without it is a day Republicans spend redrawing maps. Fight for this bill like the democracy it's designed to protect depends on it — because it does.
