Support Universal Basic Income Legislation

To: Sen. Stern, Asm. Schultz, Gov. Newsom

From: A verified voter in Toluca Lake, CA

April 12

I need you to support legislation establishing a universal basic income program. This policy would provide direct, unconditional cash payments to all residents, fundamentally changing how we approach economic security. Universal basic income addresses the core problem of cost of living that keeps millions of Americans trapped in survival mode. When people aren't forced to choose between rent and groceries, they can invest in education, start businesses, care for family members, or pursue work that matters to them. The current system punishes people for trying to improve their circumstances by cutting benefits the moment they earn slightly more. The evidence supports this approach. Pilot programs across the country show that cash transfers reduce poverty without discouraging work. People use the money responsibly for housing, food, healthcare, and debt reduction. Meanwhile, our existing welfare bureaucracy costs billions to administer and leaves gaps that hurt the people it's supposed to help. A universal basic income simplifies the safety net, eliminates the poverty trap, and recognizes that economic security is the foundation for everything else. I expect you to champion this policy.
