I am writing to express my absolute condemnation of the House Republicans’ recent vote to block subpoenas regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) actions in Minneapolis. This refusal to exercise oversight in the face of the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good—a 37-year-old American citizen and mother of a six-year-old—is a shameful abdication of your constitutional duty.
Renee Nicole Good was not a "threat" or a "terrorist"; she was a poet, a writer, and a U.S. citizen exercising her rights as a legal observer. Multiple videos of the incident clearly show that Renee was attempting to comply with conflicting orders and drive away from a scene of chaos when an ICE agent reached across the hood of her vehicle and shot her in the head.
The administration’s claim of self-defense has been publicly labeled "bullsh*t" by local officials who have viewed the footage. The video evidence suggests this was not an act of law enforcement, but a cold-blooded murder carried out by an unrestrained paramilitary force operating with total impunity on American soil.
By voting down subpoenas to investigate this killing, the Republican majority is signaling that federal agents are now above the law and that the lives of U.S. citizens are forfeit if they dare to witness or document government overreach. This is a terrifying escalation of state-sponsored violence that leaves a six-year-old child without a mother.
I demand the following:
1. Immediate Congressional Subpoenas: Congress must compel the testimony of the ICE agents involved and the DHS officials who authorized these aggressive tactics in residential neighborhoods.
2. A Full Criminal Investigation: The Department of Justice must investigate this shooting as a violation of civil rights and a criminal act.
3. Public Transparency: All unedited body camera and surveillance footage must be released to the public immediately.
History will remember those who chose to shield killers behind a badge rather than protect the citizens they were sworn to serve. Your silence and your "no" votes are a betrayal of the American people. We will not look away, and we will not forget Renee Nicole Good.
