I am writing with grave concern about corruption in the office of the President. The constitutional order is in part maintained by the limitation placed on our federal elected officials - they cannot use their position in office for personal gain. They are nor kings but citizens in service. For the President this is especially key and the emouluments clause in the constitution sets these expectations. Upholding and defending the constitution requires a willingness to NOT use the position in ways that even appear to be corrupt. Throughout his time in elected office, President Trump has flouted this long held standard of behavior. In his first term, he refused to release his tax returns. He also refused to place his assets in a blind trust - unlike every other president before him. Foreign officials courted favor by staying at Trump brand hotels. Now this corruption has ramped up. First, foreign governments and domestic individuals may seek favor by paying to play with the executive branch. Whether it is membership in a private club run by Donald Trump Jr. or $1 million dollar plate dinners at a Trump property for a Super Pac whose main candidate is term limited from another run to the ability of individuals to pay the President directly through the purchase of a valueless meme coin that he and his wife make a profit from we are in an unprecedented time of corruption and graft that would make pre-Progressive Era politicians blush. And now today, the Qatari government has offered to gift the president a $400 million flying palace beyond the wildest dreams of Aladdin! This plane is not free. It comes at the cost of the soul of a democracy that is unbought and unbowed in the face of corruption and foreign influence. A recent report indicated that.the net worth of the Trump family has increased by $3 billion dollars since inauguration. This is outrageous and it makes me sick. It has to stop. In the future, many will look back on this moment. And your great grandchildren will wonder where you stood - for or against corruption. I personally will know I stood against it. What about you?
