You must demand ICE agents remove masks, restore badges, and name plates
To: Rep. Malliotakis
From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY
June 7
I am deeply concerned about the change in federal officers behavior as it relates to detention actions. I do not understand why it is legal for federal officers to detain people without warrants, without having to identify who they are and what agencies they work for, with their faces covered, without providing any information about where the person who is being detained is going to be held, and without even checking that they are detaining the right person!!
The lack of regular procedure is causing many opportunities for violence to happen where members of the New York City community do not know who is taking their loved ones. This lack of standard procedures is causing people to react with suspicion and anger.
As my representative, you have a vested interest in maintaining public safety, and you should be calling on federal agents who are involved in detention activities to clearly wear identifying information including their badges and names, to state the charges or show warrants for persons being detained, and to provide information about where the person will be held.
You have told me that you believe in the Constitution. I am beginning to doubt that this is true because you have said nothing in the face of the secretary for the DHS incorrectly defining what habeas corpus is, Trump saying that he's not sure he has to abide by the Constitution, especially the fifth Amendment, and ICE acting like secret police instead of federal agents.
When are you going to speak out and say that this is unacceptable because it is causing dangerous situations on our streets? New Yorkers deserve to have our rights respected. And this is a very dangerous situation for our law enforcement as well as the communities suspicion of all law officers has grown because of the bad behavior of the federal agents.
What are you going to do Representative Malliotakis, to prove that you actually do care about the safety of your constituents like me? I am watching and I am listening and I will hold you accountable.
You have a platform in Congress, use it!
