I am writing to you to suggest that you and other like-minded Senators write a bill that would enact a law to set up a Federal Income Tax Escrow Account that would be administered on a State-by-state basis by their legislators. Rather than paying federal taxes directly to the IRS, the escrow account would provide a voluntary federal tax payment option for taxpayers who want to voice their objections to the myriad of constitutionally questionable funding abuses that are rampantly characteristic of the Trump administration. Distribution of the funds to the federal government would be contingent on a return to ethical funding policies and democratic practices that put the priorities of the many ahead of the already favored few. Chief among those abuses, the redistribution of tax dollars and entitlements from the lower 90% of the American population to the top 10% - and especially the top 0.01% - is an egregious abuse of fiscal power and fundamentally immoral. Furthermore, this redistribution is deliberately jeopardizing tens of millions of Americans access to affordable healthcare, the deployment of cheap green energy, the preservation of clean air and water, and educational opportunities, among other things. Additionally, denying congressional funds that were already approved - often money intended for majority blue states - is a particularly offensive policy that deleteriously affects a plurality of Americans. Indeed, rather than investing in our country’s greatest resource- our human capital- the administration is squandering our tax dollars, and collective future for the benefit of those who already have so much wealth, power, and influence. Moreover, billions of tax dollars are funding lawless military acts off the coast of Venezuela, subsidies for coal and fossil fuels that exacerbate global climate change, weather disasters, and consequent poor public health. The list of ill-considered budgetary distributions are legion with this regime. While there is some power in street protests against the offenses of the Trump administration, legislative pressure that redirects the power of the purse is how this administration will actually notice the will of the people. I encourage you to consider this proposal - or one like it - to help restore fairness and dignity to the vast majority of tax-payers in this country.
