Urgent: Congressional Authority and U.S. Actions Toward Venezuela

To: Sen. Bennet, Sen. Hickenlooper, Rep. DeGette

From: A constituent in Denver, CO

January 8

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Trump’s actions and statements related to U.S. military involvement in Venezuela. Any military operation—whether ongoing, planned, or implied—must be explicitly authorized by Congress. The Constitution is clear: the power to declare war does not belong to the President acting alone. Allowing executive military action without congressional approval sets a dangerous precedent and erodes the rule of law. Furthermore, efforts to overthrow the government of a sovereign nation violate international law. Regime change carried out through force, coercion, or military pressure undermines global stability and directly contradicts the principles the United States claims to uphold. President Trump has publicly framed U.S. actions toward Venezuela as part of a “war on drugs.” Yet at the same time, he has insisted on taking control of Venezuela’s oil supply. This contradiction is alarming. Seizing or controlling another nation’s natural resources is not law enforcement—it is blatant theft, and it is illegal under international law. I urge you not to sit back and allow the President to break the law. Congress must assert its constitutional authority, demand transparency, and take immediate action to prevent unauthorized military intervention and illegal resource exploitation. History will judge whether Congress chose to uphold the Constitution or allowed it to be ignored. I ask you to choose accountability, legality, and restraint.
