Protecting American Workforce and Regional Stability
To: Pres. Trump
From: A constituent in Bronx, NY
August 12
I am writing to respectfully urge your administration to reconsider and reverse the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from Haiti and other designated nations facing severe humanitarian crises.
TPS was established by Congress to ensure that the United States provides safe harbor to individuals when returning to their home countries is unsafe due to ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or extraordinary political instability. Today, Haiti continues to face unprecedented gang violence, severe food insecurity, and political collapse, making safe return impossible for hundreds of thousands of families.
Stripping legal protections from long-term, law-abiding TPS holders carries severe human and economic consequences for the United States:
Economic Impact: Hundreds of thousands of TPS recipients have lived lawfully in the U.S. for years, contributing billions of dollars annually in taxes and filling vital labor roles in essential industries such as healthcare, elder care, construction, and hospitality.
Family Unity: Many TPS holders are parents to U.S.-citizen children. Ending these protections forces families into impossible choices between displacement and separation.
Regional Stability: Forcing massive returns to unstable nations exacerbates humanitarian crises abroad and undermines regional security efforts.
Extending TPS is both a practical economic decision and a reflection of core American values of stability and humanitarian leadership. I urge you to direct the Department of Homeland Security to reinstate and extend TPS designations for Haiti and other vulnerable groups.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
