Defend Habeas Corpus and Stop Inhumane Enforcement Tactics

To: Sen. Cotton, Sen. Boozman, Rep. Womack

From: A constituent in Bentonville, AR

May 10

I am writing today as your constituent to express my deep alarm at recent events and the growing threats to constitutional rights in our country. A recent video from Worcester, Massachusetts shows ICE agents attempting to forcibly remove a baby from a mother’s arms while neighbors plead with them to stop. The situation escalated with the arrest of a teenage daughter and a community member, all in front of a terrified family. It was heartbreaking and completely unacceptable in a country that claims to value human rights and due process. Even more disturbing are recent comments from Stephen Miller suggesting the government is considering suspending habeas corpus. This is a direct attack on one of the most fundamental protections in our legal system: the right of every person to challenge unlawful detention in court. We are not facing a rebellion. We are not under invasion. There is no constitutional justification for suspending habeas corpus. The only reason to even consider such a move is to prevent legal oversight of detentions that may already be illegal. Every person in America, regardless of citizenship status, has the right to their day in court. That right is what separates this country from authoritarian regimes. It must be preserved at all costs. I urge you to oppose any attempt to suspend habeas corpus. I ask that you publicly condemn these actions and hold those responsible accountable. It is time to speak clearly and act with courage. This is not just about immigration. This is about the Constitution. This is about who we are as a country.
