No Detention Camps in Iowa — Close Them Everywhere

To: Sen. Grassley, Rep. Nunn, Sen. Ernst

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

August 20

I urge you to oppose any attempt to establish detention camps in Iowa and to support legislation to close all such facilities nationwide. Trump’s expansion plan—including tent cities on military bases and even the use of Guantánamo Bay—represents a dangerous misuse of resources and a violation of human rights (Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/08/07/trump-fort-bliss-migrants-detention/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)). These facilities are inhumane, wasteful, and opposed by a majority of Americans (Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/world/half-americans-oppose-immigrant-detention-camps-reutersipsos-poll-finds-2024-05-20/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)). Iowa must not be complicit. Please: • Pledge to block any detention camp in Iowa. • Support federal legislation to close all existing detention centers. • Promote humane alternatives that respect due process and dignity. This is a moment for Iowa to lead with fairness, compassion, and common sense.
