Reduce Pharmaceutical waste

To: Sen. Timken, Gov. DeWine, Rep. Thomas

From: A constituent in Canton, OH

May 21

I’m writing to urge you to address the excessive plastic waste generated by the pharmaceutical industry—an issue that receives far too little attention in environmental policy discussions. Prescription medications are routinely dispensed in oversized plastic bottles, often 5–10 times larger than needed. A one-month supply may barely cover the bottom of the container, yet these bottles are single-use and rarely recyclable. Multiply this by millions of prescriptions, and the environmental cost is staggering. While single-use plastic straws and bags are being regulated, pharmaceutical packaging remains untouched—even though alternatives like right-sized bottles, refillable containers, or return programs could significantly reduce waste without compromising safety. Please consider legislation or agency pressure to push for more sustainable prescription packaging practices. The health of our environment deserves the same priority we give to human health.
