An Open Letter

To: Rep. Smith, Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A constituent in Festus, MO

July 16

The attacks on PBS, NPR, and USAID must stop. The funds for these have already been approved on a bipartisan basis and to reverse course now is another unprecedented move put forth by this White House. PBS offers quality educational programming for children and families. Their pledge drives would not make up for the loss of federal funding, which is very minimal compared to the loss of this service. NPR also offers educational programming as well as providing emergency bulletins for rural areas. The funds for USAID are not only in our country's best interest, but also the right thing to do. Preventing children and families from starving or dying from preventable diseases should be a no-brainer for people who claim to be Christians, pro-life, and pro-family. Because of mismanagement and cuts, previously purchased food for starving children was allowed to expire and was burned. This is not preventing "wasteful spending," this is the definition of wasteful spending and mismanagement. The power of the purse has always been the role of the Congress, and by passing this, you are ceding more power to the Executive Branch. I am asking that you adhere to the legislation already in place and do not take away the funding for these programs.
