I am writing as your constituent to demand an explanation for why you and your colleagues in Congress have not seriously examined and addressed concerns about President Trump’s mental fitness for office. The president’s recent speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos was deeply troubling and, frankly, embarrassing for the United States on the world stage. During that speech President Trump repeatedly mischaracterized our alliances and alliances’ contributions, including questioning whether NATO allies “would be there” if the United States were ever truly in need. He claimed that NATO troops “stayed a little back” from the frontlines in Afghanistan, dismissing the documented sacrifices of thousands of allied soldiers who fought alongside American forces for two decades, with hundreds killed and many more wounded. These comments were widely condemned by allied leaders as insulting and factually incorrect, particularly by the British prime minister and other NATO officials who emphasized that dozens of British and other allied personnel died in Afghanistan alongside U.S. troops. At Davos, President Trump also made a series of baffling statements that included confusing basic geography more than once, such as mixing up Greenland and Iceland while discussing territorial and strategic issues. He derided long-standing alliances and painted our closest partners as unreliable, even though NATO’s mutual defense commitment has only been invoked once — after the September 11 attacks — and resulted in strong allied participation in combat operations. This rhetoric does not match the historical record or the reality of cooperation that helped defeat terrorist networks and save countless lives. What concerns me deeply is not merely the content of these remarks, but the manner in which the president delivered them. The speech was rambling, unfocused, and at times incoherent — raising serious questions about his cognitive clarity, judgment, and ability to represent the United States effectively in diplomatic settings. The president is 79 years old and has a long and contentious history of erratic public statements. Many Americans, myself included, are alarmed that neither Congress nor your office has pursued any formal evaluation of his mental fitness, cognitive health, or capacity to fulfill the constitutional duties of the presidency. Our constitutional system depends on checks and balances, and one of the critical roles of Congress is oversight — especially when the actions and behavior of the executive branch undermine American credibility, national security, and global leadership. Instead of exercising that authority, far too many members of your party have knelt to the president, ceded their oversight power, and allowed partisan loyalty to override the responsibility to hold the president accountable. I expect answers. I want to know why you have not supported hearings, a cognitive assessment, or any formal inquiry into the president’s mental fitness given his repeated public displays of confusion, inaccurate statements on matters of national security, and apparent inability to stay on topic in speeches to world leaders. How do you reconcile this lack of oversight with your oath to uphold the Constitution and protect American interests? Silence on these matters is unacceptable. I urge you to fulfill your constitutional duties, act with courage, and demand transparency and accountability from the president — not defer to him or defend his behavior out of fear of political reprisal. Our nation and our alliances deserve nothing less. I look forward to your prompt response.
