RE: Time to Eliminate the Threat: An Open Letter to Congress I’m sure that you and your fellow members of Congress recognize the consequences of Trump’s insane actions and the need to reign them in. At a minimum, I urge you to invoke the War Powers Act immediately, although, given all the other irrational actions the president has taken of late, the safest course of action would be to remove him from office. Trump has intentionally led us into a war with detrimental consequences to both the United States and the world that were entirely foreseen. He needs to be prevented from doing further harm. Prior to initiating hostilities with Iran: • transit through Strait of Hormuz was free and unrestrained; • U.S. stockpiles of defensive interceptors and offensive precision weapons were robust; • the infrastructure of Iran’s neighbors was intact; and • Iran had agreed to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium under international supervision, which (along with other protections) would have effectively lengthened breakout time (the time to develop a bomb) back almost to what it was before the JCPOA (negotiated by Obama) was cancelled by Trump. Today, after almost 40 days of war, which has cost the lives of 13 U.S. service men with 350 more wounded, and more than $35 billion (not counting weapons replacement and battle damage): • Iran controls the Strait and has been charging ships $2 million to transit; • U.S. stockpiles of defensive and offensive precision weapons are depleted; • the infrastructure of Iran’s neighbors has sustained substantial damage; • no restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program are in place; and • due to war-related disruptions, costs for many consumer goods have substantially increased. Despite wild claims by the president, Iran retains the ability to maintain control over the Strait and inflict substantial harm on its neighbors, which is why Trump agreed to Iran’s terms for the current ceasefire. It is time to act. I would also appreciate a response. Thank you for your time and consideration.
