Block NEH Funding for Trump's Archway Project

To: Rep. Begich, Sen. Sullivan, Sen. Murkowski

April 8

Vote against any appropriation that allows the National Endowment for the Humanities to fund President Trump's archway project across from the Lincoln Memorial. The White House plans to divert $15 million in NEH funds—$2 million directly and $13 million in matching grants—to build this monument. That money should support humanities research, education, and cultural preservation, not vanity construction projects. The NEH exists to advance knowledge and understanding of history, literature, and philosophy. Using its budget to build a 250-foot arch contradicts the agency's mission entirely. This isn't preservation or scholarship. It's using taxpayer dollars meant for humanities programs to construct a monument that Trump himself told donors was already fully funded. Vietnam veterans have already filed suit against this project, citing increased traffic congestion and obstructed views of Arlington National Cemetery. The administration faces serious challenges right now, including military operations in the Middle East and upcoming midterms. Spending $15 million in humanities funding on an arch is indefensible when those dollars could support actual NEH programs across the country. Block this appropriation and protect the NEH budget for its intended purpose.
