Oppose the SAVE Act and Use Filibuster Time for Epstein Files
To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Burbank, CA
February 17
I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act (SB128) and, if forced into a filibuster to block this legislation, to use that time to read the Epstein files into the Congressional Record. This would serve the dual purpose of preventing a harmful voter suppression bill while bringing transparency to matters of significant public interest.
The SAVE Act would impose documentary proof of citizenship requirements on all federal election voter registration, creating substantial barriers for eligible American citizens. The legislation mandates that states establish verification programs within just 30 days of enactment, an administratively impossible timeline that would create chaos in election administration. No federal funding is provided to support implementation, leaving states to absorb these unfunded mandates from already strained election budgets.
The bill would disproportionately burden eligible voters who lack passports, REAL ID-compliant identification, or birth certificates. Many native-born citizens, particularly elderly Americans and those born in rural areas, lack these documents due to historical record-keeping limitations. The legislation addresses a virtually nonexistent problem, as documented cases of noncitizen voting are extremely rare, while creating certain and substantial obstacles to legitimate voter registration.
The private right of action provision would invite endless litigation against election officials, and criminal penalties for providing material assistance would have chilling effects on legitimate voter registration drives serving vulnerable communities. This represents federal overreach into state election administration that raises serious constitutional concerns under the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection guarantees.
If you must filibuster to prevent this legislation from advancing, I encourage you to use that floor time productively by reading the Epstein files into the public record. Transparency on matters of accountability serves the public interest while blocking legislation that would suppress eligible voter participation.
I ask that you vote against the SAVE Act and consider this approach should a filibuster become necessary.
